- February 12, 1991: We welcomed our grandson Daniel into the family.
- May 1991: I left California for Princeton, New Jersey, to begin work on the Mars Observer Project.
1992

- January 1992: I returned to California from Princeton, New Jersey.
- April 1992: I traveled to Cape Canaveral, Florida, to help prepare for the launch of the Mars Observer spacecraft.
- September 25, 1992: Mars Observer was successfully launched aboard a Titan III launch vehicle from Cape Canaveral AFS.
- October 1992: Due to ongoing health issues, I medically retired from JPL
